What lurks in the bushes?
Two offenders got the fright of their lives on the weekend when they were allegedly caught in the act stealing property from a Dunne Road transfer facility.
Police were called to Dunne Road by security at around 8:15pm on Sunday August 13, information was provided that a large hole had been cut in a fence surrounding the facility.
Smithfield Police attended the location and established that the offenders were still possibly on scene. The Police Dog Squad was called in and police dog Bally, his handler and an officer from the Smithfield Police Station positioned themselves in bushes outside the damaged fence.
After a short wait the two alleged offenders approached the fence, allegedly manoeuvring an amount of stolen property in a wheel barrow through the fence.
Little did they know that police dog Bally was sitting quietly in the bushes awaiting instruction from his handler. Police identified themselves along with police dog Bally whose bark is just as bad as his bite.
The pair allegedly fled from police and were apprehended after a short foot chase. The men were taken into custody without incident.
Police allegedly recovered a tent, computer equipment, a mattress and a quad bike along with other smaller property items.
A 25-year-old Speewah man and a 21-year-old Mooroobool man were both charged with entering a premises and committing an indictable offence and possession of dangerous drugs.
They are scheduled to appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court on August 30.
