Smithfield Police make a splash for a good cause
They donned the lycra, the swimming caps and the goggles and leapt from the starting blocks all in the name of raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis Queensland.
Officer-in-Charge of the Smithfield Police Station and event co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Ed Lukin rallied his troops and a team of lifesavers to take part in a 10 kilometre swim held at the Marlin Coast Swimming Pool over the weekend.
Not content to just knock out 10km in the pool, Senior Sergeant Lukin and Constable Peta Newbold, both well-known for their swimming abilities, decided to make the swim that bit harder by setting the challenge of completing every 100m in under 100 seconds. This is certainly no easy feat as the km’s start building up.
As any swimmer would know, it doesn’t take long for hunger to set in so officers and staff from Smithfield Police station were on hand to help feed the hungry swimmers. A sweets stall was also set up to sell cakes, slices and goodies to raise extra money for the cause.
Senior Sergeant Ed Lukin was extremely impressed with how the event ran (or should we say swam) and looks forward to making it an annual event.
“The swim was tough but raising over $8000 made it completely worth it,” said Senior Sergeant Lukin.
“I felt really good up until about the 7km mark and managed to hold pace at about 1min and 24 seconds for each 100. After the 7km mark though it was tough going both physically and mentally.
“A big thank you is extended to everyone who helped make this event possible, we look forward to running this again in the future.”
