Police puppy named after Queensland champion
QPS Dog Squad and Minister for Police Mark Ryan today revealed that one of the Queensland Police Service’s newest crime fighters will be named Hornet in honour of boxing World Champion Jeff Horn.
Sunday, July 2 was a special day for Queensland boxing champion Jeff Horn, and also for the QPS Dog Squad who welcomed the latest litter to their pack.
At the same time Jeff was crowned the WBO welterweight world champion at Suncorp Stadium, the ‘H’ Litter was born at the Brisbane Dog Squad complex, Oxley.
Comprising of three boys and four girls, the litter are German Shepherds. Police puppy Hornet’s siblings have also received their names; Hero and Hurricane for the boys, and Hadee, Halo, Honour and Holly for the girls.
Next week the litter will turn eight weeks old and will be collected by carers from around the state who will look after them until they are old enough to begin the next series of training.
After spending time in the puppy development program the litter will be tested to see if they will make it into the QPS as general purpose dogs.
Minister Ryan said after the recent naming competition for the G litter, it’s evident that Queenslanders really care about our police dogs and puppies.
“We had nearly 60,000 entries into that competition and I think that Hornet, named after a world champion, is a fitting honour for this puppy,” Minister Ryan said.
“We are extremely proud of Jeff’s achievements and it is my hope that Hornet will make it to a fully-fledged PD, be sworn into service and display some heroics of his own.”
