Fighting fatigue at Fletcher Creek
On Friday August 25, police from District Crime Prevention travelled to Fletcher Creek near Charters Towers as part of Queensland Road Safety Week. The morning was well received with travellers setting up chairs in front of the mobile Police Facility waiting for the kettle to boil and for the cake to be cut.
The morning was an education session in relation to the Fatal Five – fatigue, speed, seatbelts, distractions and drink/drug driving. Acting Senior Sergeant Robert Nalder from Townsville Road Policing Unit delivered this information to keep drivers safe on the roads and to be aware of the surroundings.
There were a number of other agencies in attendance. Transport and Main Roads who were there to provide further information on keeping their vehicles in a road worthy condition on the roads. Charters Towers Police also attended this location with the big focus being on fatigue and not driving longs distances without stopping and having a regular break.
The morning tea received great feed back from the tourists who were already looking forward to securing their camping spot at Fletchers Creek next year. Many of these road users have travelled long distances all the way from NSW and Victoria and made a positive comment that Queensland coppers were the best they had ever come across.
At the end of the morning the crumbs were fed to the local chooks who didn’t want to miss out on all the lovely morning tea.
