Update: Man charged over damage to Cairns cemetery

Police have charged a 41-year-old Edmonton man as a result of investigations into the alleged wilful damage of a Foster Road lawn cemetery at Mount Sheridan on Sunday.

It will be alleged the man drove a motor vehicle through a garden bed and onto a lawn cemetery area where the vehicles spinning wheels tore up turf and damaged several memorial plaques.

Inquiries led officers to a Port Douglas Road address at around 9am yesterday where the man was taken into custody.

He was charged with one count each of wilful damage of a cemetery and unlicensed driving and is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 18.
