Man charged over Gordonvale explosion

A 43-year-old Gordonvale man was charged last night following investigations into an explosion at a Templeton Street residence on August 20.

It will be alleged the man was handling a home-made explosive at around 1pm on that date when the substance detonated, resulting in serious injuries to his right hand.

The man was hospitalised as a result of his injuries and the residence was declared a crime scene for several days whilst specialist police and partner agency officers processed the incident scene.

Detectives spoke with the man at his home address last night and he was subsequently charged with unlawful possession of explosives, unlawful possession of firearms, unlawful possession of a relevant substance and possession of tainted property.

The man is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 26
