Police have charged a man with serious animal cruelty after an alleged incident in Goondi Bend, Innisfail this morning.

It will be alleged in the early hours of this morning, a trap was used to catch a domestic cat at a residence on Maple Street.

The cat was allegedly doused in petrol and set alight.

The cat, once found by its owner, was immediately taken to a local vet where it decided to euthanize it.

A 62-year-old Goondi Bend man has been charged with one count of serious animal cruelty.

He is due to appear at the Innisfail Magistrates Court on September 18.
