Beware of traffic infringement scam circulating amongst Townsville residents

Townsville residents have alerted police to a current online scam. The resident received an email advising they had been issued with a traffic infringement notice and owe $173.50. The email had a link to click saying “Please download attached e-ticket here”.

The resident was cautious as the email did not look legitimate therefore they assumed it was a scam.

Since September 2015, police have been issuing e-tickets which are electronic infringement notices. Since October 2016, the QPS are trialling the choice of electronic delivery of e-tickets via email or MMS.

However, e-tickets will only be issued via MMS or email if a person has volunteered to receive it in this manner and has had face-to-face interaction with a QPS officer in relation to the infringement.
