Update 7 – Marine search and rescue, Middle Island

Police can confirm the bodies of two men have been recovered today from the commercial fishing boat “Dianne” which overturned in Bustard Bay on Monday night.

The identities of the two men are yet to be confirmed.

Poor visibility and debris has hampered recovery efforts and the operation has been a slow process and is expected to take some time.

Specialist police divers are only able to remain under water for 13 minutes and most of those 13 minutes have been spent removing debris from the wreckage.

Water police will continue to guard the scene overnight and an exclusion zone of five nautical miles remains in place.

The recovery operation will recommence at first light tomorrow weather permitting.

Police continue to liaise with the families of the six crew members.

The vessel was located by sonar yesterday afternoon approximately two to three nautical miles off Round Hill Headland.

Police divers have confirmed the trawler is laying on the seabed in around 30 metres of water on its roof.
