School leavers learn about Choices
Townsville police and Mackay police have recently participated in the Choices Schoolies program.
Choices is a partnership between the Queensland Police Service and Central Queensland University to deliver a drama performance for Year 12 school leavers to encourage safe partying during Schoolies.
The Choices applied theatre project is run by a select group of CQ University Bachelor of Theatre students who write, direct and choreograph a 45 minute music and drama presentation using comic skits, songs and dances based on well-known movie and TV themes, and weaving them around the key safety messages relevant for Year 12 students.
The performance was delivered to eight high schools across Townsville, Ayr and Home Hill.
Some of the messages delivered include “be safe and watch your mates”, “stick together” and “don’t get into a car with a drunk or drugged driver – you could lose your licence or your life”.
The program also gives students an opportunity to ask law-related questions to the police officers at the end of the performance
Parents and carers should already be talking to school leavers about their schoolies arrangements. If you have a school leaver heading to Airlie beach get them to link in with the Whitsunday Schoolies page which is run by the Whitsunday Regional Council to help Schoolies stay on track while they stay in the Airlie.
Remember, it’s your choices that will affect you for the rest of your life.
