Operation Lasso results – Sunshine Coast

A traffic operation on the Sunshine Coast involving the Sunshine Coast Tactical Crime Squad, Nambour Road Policing Unit and southern patrol group stations has led to the arrest of two people on serious drugs charges.

Operation Lasso ran overnight, northbound on the Bruce Highway at the Glass House Mountains.

While the operation targeted drug and drink drivers on the roads, it was also designed to detect and stop property and drug offenders travelling in vehicles to the Sunshine Coast, to commit offences.

At around 10.30pm, a vehicle travelling towards the Sunshine Coast was routinely intercepted by officers. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered almost two kilograms of cannabis, 2,000 MDMA pills as well as a quantity of cocaine and cash.

The driver, a 21-year-old man from Mackay was charged with three counts of possessing a dangerous drug and receiving tainted property. He will appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on October 26.

The passenger, a 29-year-old man was charged with two counts of possessing a dangerous drug. He will appear in Court on November 22.

Senior Sergeant Scott Wiggins, officer in charge of the Sunshine Coast Tactical Crime Squad said they were working proactively to prevent drug and property offenders entering the Sunshine Coast.

“The operation resulted in the location and seizure of substantial quantities of drugs worth approximately $30,000 and led to the arrest of two people,” Senior Sergeant Wiggins said.

“It’s a significant amount of substance which was headed for our streets which we have managed to seize before it could be sold.”

More than 1000 random breath tests and 31 drug tests were conducted during the operation which ran from 8pm yesterday until 2am today.

The operation netted 21 people on 26 charges with police intercepting approximately 1030 vehicles during the operation.
