A student’s perspective: “Why I wear my bicycle helmet”

Elanora Police Beat conducting a bicycle safety initiative in the lead up to Queensland Road Safety Week have been intercepting local students who are wearing their helmets.

Each student is given a McDonald’s voucher and an entry into the draw to win an iPhone 7 for displaying a correct safety measure while riding bicycles.

Police intercepted Taine Clarke, a student at Palm Beach Currumbin High School, who shared the reason he wears his helmet when riding his bike. You can hear what he has to say by watching the video below.

The incentive is designed to encourage students to be bicycle safe and to create awareness amongst the kids – which it has certainly done.

Police have observed an increase in students wearing their helmets and this has been a great partnership between police, businesses and the school community to address an important safety issue for young people.

Police have dealt with two very serious accidents involving students from both schools over recent years and in both instances they were wearing helmets which potentially saved their lives.

The iPhone draw will take place at Telstra at the Pines Elanora on August 24 during Queensland Road Safety Week.
