Armed robbery, Southport

Police are investigating following the robbery of a taxi driver at Southport early this morning.

Preliminary information suggests around 12.25am a 58-year-old man had stopped his taxi on Muir Street when another man came and smashed the driver’s side window with a hammer.

The man then threatened the driver, claiming he had a knife, and demanded money.

The victim complied and handed over a sum of cash and his mobile phone.

The man then opened the passenger door of the taxi however fled after the driver sounded the car horn.

He is described as Caucasian in appearance, around 180cm tall with a slim build and was wearing a dark coloured hooded jumper.

The taxi driver was not injured as a result of the incident.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have further information to contact Policelink or Crime Stoppers.
