Assault Free Zone launches in Mackay
Yesterday Mackay’s District Officer Superintendent Bruce McNab launched the Assault Free Zone campaign for the Mackay Police District. State Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert, Assistant Commissioner for the Central Region Alistair Dawson, Councillors from the Mackay Regional Council, representatives from the Whitsunday Regional Council, Mackay’s Street Chaplaincy members, members from the Mackay local Crime Stoppers committee and representatives from other government agencies all attended the launch.
The Assault Free Zone was designed to remind everyone in our community that assaults will not be tolerated in any part of our community, in any environment, at any time of the day or night.
Assaults have been reported to police in our district at locations such as dwelling houses, parties, people sharing houses who were not related, large gatherings like concerts and sporting events and even hospitals and in educational environments.
We wanted to create a new assault prevention slogan which could be used in any situation.
The actual wording “Assault Free Zone” stems from consultation with many of Mackay’s front-line officers who were very keen to have an input. Further consultation with investigators lead to the words “our community” being added – all communities, no matter whether large or small could value the slogan. It is hoped that the colouring/wording stand out as a warning.
This slogan is now printed on water cups, paper bags, posters and banners. In fact, we have well over 70,000 promotional items to share across our community!
The Assault Free Zone water cups – will be distributed at large gathering events like Schoolies or in one of Mackay’s Safe Night Precincts.
The Assault Free Zone bags – will be provided to the distributors of liquor. Owners will be requested to use them when a bottle of liquor is purchased and then message will then be taken directly into the home.
The Assault Free Zone posters and banners will be displayed in pubs, clubs, waitings rooms, police stations, hospitals etc.
The Assault Free Zone wrist bands (supplied by our partners at Mackay City Safe) will be used and made available by Mackay police, licensed venues and Street Chaplaincy in our Mackay.
Mackay district police wish to make our community one where assaults will not be tolerated in any way, in any environment and at any time of the day or not.
We look forward to working with the community to achieve this aim.
