Blue Light Movie Night turned disco
Lower Hebert Blue Light Association had a movie night on Friday, August 18. The movie of the night was the newly released, A Dog’s Purpose.
The volunteers spent hours and hours decorating the hall in all things dogs. Dog posters, dog toys, dog themed foods, custom dog menu including pupcorn and even the front path was gurnied into an array of dog paw prints and a welcome reading Dog’s world, no cats.
Now picture this… We had the best turn out to a movie night in the last two years with around 70 children, along with families, joining us for the evening. The hall is packed and the movie is turned on. Everyone is loving the movie (I mean who doesn’t like cute dogs and hearing the funny things they think about?). Then all of a sudden – darkness.
The projector ceased working and gave up on projecting cute dogs onto the large inflatable screen. The next 10 minutes that followed was a desperate attempt to get the movie up and running, all the while the kids increasingly getting more inpatient. Eventually fate was accepted and the movie was just a distant memory.
Now we were faced with kids who weren’t being picked up for another hour and a half. What do we do? Why not pull an improvised disco at the last second? Brilliant idea!
Disco time was announced and the kids were super excited. I have never seen chairs moved to the side of the room so quickly! We already had the disco equipment set up to add some fun to the start of the movie so it was a matter of lights off, disco lights on, turn the music up and put the smoke machine into place.
Police officer Shelley then turned into DJ Shelley and tended to the very very important task of taking song requests and shooting out smoke. Police Liaison Officers Michelle and Tracy turned into Simon Says and Musical Statue choreographers and Volunteers Kev, Roy, Jamie and Kim turned into judges for Lower Herbert’s got Talent Dance Off Competition.
Dog prizes were given out to all the winners and overall we made the best of an unplanned situation. The night was finished with a fitting song ‘Who Let the Dogs Out.’ Fittingly, all the kids chimed in with “woof, woof, woof woof”.
