Cairns overnight crime wrap, October 19

Serious Assault Police, Smithfield: A 14-year-old boy has been charged with two counts of serious assault police.

It will be alleged two officers from Smithfield Police Station were called to a Smithfield shopping complex yesterday afternoon in relation to a shop stealing matter.

The officers made attempts to talk to a boy before he allegedly became hostile and aggressive, walking away from the officers.

The boy was advised he was under arrest, however became violent when the officers attempted to take him into custody.

It will be alleged the boy bit the hand of one of the officers which broke the skin and caused minor swelling, whilst they made attempts to arrest him.

It will further be alleged the boy was restrained by the officers and placed in a police vehicle where he later spat in the face of one of the officers.

The boy was conveyed to the Cairns Watch House and the officers will now undergo disease testing.

Property offences, Cairns: A 37-year-old Westcourt man has been charged with numerous property offences that were allegedly committed in Westcourt, Portsmith Manunda and Cairns, dating back to 2015.

Police executed a search warrant at the man’s address yesterday, where it will be alleged property suspected of being stolen were located, along with property that was confirmed as being stolen. It will further be alleged that dangerous drugs were also located during the search.

The man has been charged with six counts of stealing, three counts each of possess tainted property and possessing dangerous drugs and one count of attempted stealing.

He will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court this morning.
