Cairns overnight crime wrap, September 26

Update arrest, Earlville, further charges: A 20-year-old Cairns man arrested last week following a number of recent incidents including the alleged ramming of a police vehicle at Buchan’s Point on August 28 has been served with further charges by Mossman detectives.

 The man was further charged with five counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, seven counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, seven counts of wilful damage, seven counts of stealing, seven drug related offences, one count of entering a premises and committing an indictable offence and a number of other traffic related offences.

The man was arrested on September 21 at a De Jarlis Street residence in Earlville following an extensive police operation to locate the man. He remains in custody and is next scheduled appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court in on October 16.

Man charged, serious assault, Woree: Detectives yesterday charged a 28-year-old Woree man following investigations into the alleged assault of a 40-year-old Woree man outside a Toogood Road grocery store on August 30.

Police will allege that the man head-butted the victim and struck him in the face a number of times.

The victim had earlier exited the store and requested that the man and his children not play with his dogs after allegedly observing the man let his dogs out of their cage on the rear of his vehicle. When the victim had finished inside the store he returned to his vehicle where he was approached by the man and assaulted.

The victim sustained lacerations and bruising to his eyes and face.

The 28-year-old man was charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm. He is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.

Grievous bodily harm charges, Cairns City: A 34-year-old man was yesterday charged by detectives following investigations into a serious assault on Pier Point Road on September 3.

Police will allege that in an unprovoked assault, the man struck a 37-year-old male in the face causing his jaw to break.

The victim was known to the man. They had earlier been at a licenced premise where the victim helped remove the man after he was asked to leave by security. The victim then left in a taxi and was allegedly followed in another vehicle by the man. When the victim alighted from the taxi on Pier Point Road, he was allegedly struck without warning by the man.

The 34-year-old Edmonton man was charged with one count of grievous bodily harm and is scheduled to appear at the Cairns Magistrates Court on October 24.
