Cairns overnight media wrap, Friday August 25

Traffic and other charges, Cairns:  A 25-year-old Tasmanian man was charged following a traffic intercept at Smithfield early this morning.

Police were patrolling along McGregor Road when they observed a sedan entering the car parking area of a nearby university complex at around 12:15am.

Officers spoke with the driver and inquires revealed he did not hold a drivers license.

A requirement was then made for the man to supply a breath specimen and he allegedly declined to do so.

He was placed under arrest and transported to the Cairns Police Breath Analysis Section where it is alleged he failed to supply a specimen of breath when directed.

It is further alleged he then physically obstructed officers as he was being prepared for custody, and subsequently damaged material in a watchhouse cell.

The man was charged with two counts of obstructing police and one count each of unlicensed driving, failing to provide a breath specimen for analysis and wilful damage of police property.

He is expected to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 11. 

Boy charged over Woree robbery incident:  Detectives yesterday charged a 16-year-old Edmonton boy as part of ongoing investigations into a robbery incident that occurred at Woree on June 8.

An 18-year-old man was walking his bicycle through a vacant land area between Charlotte Close and Rigg Street with his 16-year-old friend at around 3:15pm when he was allegedly assaulted.

His BMX bike and phone were stolen as a result of the incident.

The victim sustained a facial fracture and lacerations and was treated at the scene before being transported to Cairns Hospital.

The Edmonton boy was taken into custody just after 5pm yesterday and charged with assault occasioning bodily harm whilst in company.

Another 16-year-old boy from Bungalow, as well as two men aged 17 from Manunda and Edmonton have already been charged in relation to the incident and investigations are continuing.
