It will be alleged the man was handling a home-made explosive at around 1pm on that date when the substance detonated, resulting in serious injuries to his right hand.
The man was hospitalised as a result of his injuries and the residence was declared a crime scene for several days whilst specialist police and partner agency officers processed the incident scene.
Detectives spoke with the man at his home address last night and he was subsequently charged with unlawful possession of explosives, unlawful possession of firearms, unlawful possession of a relevant substance and possession of tainted property.
The man is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 26.

It will be further alleged the man was intercepted by Smithfield police at around 1.30am yesterday on Mount Milman Drive, after they observed him driving another vehicle with no registration plates fitted.
He was taken into custody and charged with two counts of disqualified driving, and one count each of entering premises with intent, unlawful possession of explosives, receiving tainted property, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an uninsured vehicle, driving a vehicle without registration plates fitted and using a registration plate belonging to another vehicle.
