Robbery charge, North Cairns: Cairns detectives yesterday charged a 43-year-old man with one count each of armed robbery, attempted fraud and possession of a dangerous drug.

It will be alleged the man approached a 55-year-old Cairns North man who was walking on the footpath along Lily Creek between James and Charles Streets, Cairns North at about 2.15pm yesterday when he punched him in the face, causing minor facial injuries.

It’s further alleged the man stole the man’s phone and bank card from his shirt pocket, however as he fled he dropped the mobile phone.

The victim reported the matter to police and provided a good description of the man. Police shared the information with our Cairns Regional Council (CRC) CCTV operators who observed the man in Lake Street and police made the arrest.

This arrest yesterday highlights the value of community collaboration with local police and CRC CCTV operators working in partnership to ensure a proactive approach to public safety in Cairns.

The man is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.

Drug charges, Woree: A 22-year-old Woree man was charged yesterday by Tactical Crime Squad officers with three counts of possess dangerous drugs, one count each of supply dangerous drugs, possess property suspected of the proceeds of an offence under the drugs misuse act, possess anything used in the commission of a crime and obstruct police.

It will be alleged police executed a search warrant at a property in Sunbird Drive Woree at about 4.15pm yesterday and located a quantity of steroids and MDMA tablets before the man fled on foot from the residence.

Police commenced a 1km foot chase before the man was apprehended by police.

He is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on October 13.
