Cairns weekend crime wrap, Monday October 16

Attempted armed robbery, Smithfield: A 17-year-old Smithfield man has been charged over the weekend with attempted armed robbery and other drug related offences.

It will be alleged the man committed the offences on October 9 in a Bruce Highway underpass in Smithfield, where he allegedly produced a handgun and demanded money from a man and woman accessing the thoroughfare.

A man was located at about 12:30am yesterday morning at a Woree address, where he was arrested and taken into custody.

He has been charged with two counts of attempted robbery armed and one count each of possessing dangerous drugs and possessing utensils that had been used.

The man will appear before the Cairns Magistrates Court this morning.

House Fire, Parramatta Park: Emergency crews were called to Spence Street, Parramatta Park on Saturday after reports of a house fire at the address.

Just after mid-day, a neighbour from an adjoining property was alerted to the fire by the smell of smoke. Upon observing the dwelling ablaze, the neighbour called QFES and made attempts to extinguish the blaze before their arrival.

QFES attended the scene and extinguished the fire, however the dwelling was completely destroyed as a result.

The dwelling was un-inhabited and without power prior to the fire, however it has previously been occupied by squatters and itinerants. No persons were located inside, nor was anyone injured in the fire.

The fire is being treated as suspicious and anyone with information that could assist police in their investigations are urged to contact Cairns CIB or Crime Stoppers.

Unlawful wounding, Earlville: A 20-year-old Cairns woman has been charged over the weekend with one count of wounding.

Police were called to Chinaman Creek, south of Mulgrave Road, Earlville at about 4pm on Saturday afternoon after receiving information of the alleged assault.

Police arrived a short time later where the 55-year-old male victim was observed to have lacerations to his face.

It will be alleged the woman hit the victim over the back of the head with a wine bottle causing it to smash, before stabbing him in the face with the same broken bottle.

The victim sustained a large laceration to his forehead and down half his nose. The victim and the offender were not known to each other.

The woman was later arrested and transported to the Cairns watch House. She will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court this morning.
