Cairns weekend media wrap, Monday September 4
Property charges, Bayview Heights: A 42-year-old Bayview Heights man was charged on Saturday as a result of investigations into the alleged theft of a large marine propeller from a Portsmith-based marine engineering business last month.
It will be alleged entry was forced to the Tingira Street complex between August 26 and 28 and a large bronze propeller was stolen. It will be further alleged the 1.5 tonne propeller was later sold to a Bungalow metal recycling business.
Officers from the Cairns Property Crime Squad executed a search warrant at a Bayview Heights address at around 2:30pm where they spoke with the man.
Officers allegedly located and seized a large quantity of workshop equipment, power and hand tools, a kayak and other items. Investigations are continuing into the origins of these items.
The man was charged with one count each of stealing, receiving tainted property and fraud. He is expected to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 19.
The bronze propeller has also been recovered.
Burglary and property charges, Manoora: Two boys aged 14 and 16 were charged last night following investigations into a number of alleged burglary offences reported in the Manoora area.
It will be alleged entry was forced to a Murray Street residence just after 7pm last night and a phone and other property stolen whilst the resident was out.
Police located the pair at a MacIlwraith Street residence at around 9pm and they were taken into custody.
They were each charged with four counts of burglary, two counts of attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle and single counts of entering premises with intent.
The charges relate to offences allegedly committed at residences in Murray and MacIlwraith Streets between August 27 and yesterday.
Driver charged twice with drink driving, Cairns: A 24-year-old Bungalow man will have to rethink his travel arrangements after being apprehended twice for alleged drink-driving on Saturday.
It will be alleged that a police patrol observed the man driving his utility along Lake Street at around 4.40am with the headlights off. He was intercepted and subsequently charged with mid-range drink driving at Cairns Police Station after he returned a breath alcohol reading of 0.147 BAC.
He was also issued with a 24-hour driver license suspension.
The man then told officers he needed to drive his vehicle home because he had expensive tools in the back and he was advised not to do so and to make other arrangements.
It will be further alleged that the man left the police station, returned to his vehicle and drove it home.
Police attended his Bungalow address and allegedly observed him driving down his street just after 6am.
Officers activated the flashing lights in an attempt to intercept the utility and the man allegedly drove around the police vehicle and parked in his driveway before fleeing on foot into the back yard.
Officers gave chase and located him hiding behind a shed. It will be further alleged that he then threatened officers before running at them in a threatening manner.
The man was arrested after a brief struggle.
He subsequently underwent a second breath test, this time returning a breath alcohol reading of 0.100 BAC and was again charged with one count of mid-range drink driving.
He was charged with a second count of mid-range drink driving, as well as one count each of driving on a suspended licence, failing to stop, assaulting police and obstructing police.
He is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 19.
