The annual Cairns and Regional Multicultural Association (CARMA) Festival held in Cairns on August 19, saw the community come together to explore and celebrate Far North Queensland’s rich cultural diversity.

CARMA aims to bring communities to work together to promote, preserve, share and embrace the diverse cultures of the region in an effort to showcase Cairns as an inclusive multicultural community.

The festival saw a diverse group of cultures come together and enjoy the music, song, dance, art, craft, story-telling, workshops demonstrations and great food from around the region.

Acting Sergeant Lauren Barron from the Far North Cross Cultural Liaison Unit said everyone benefits from diversity and Australian society allows people to maintain their cultural values and practices.

“It was great to talk to people from many different cultures and experience their culture through music, song, dance, demonstrations and food”, Acting Sergeant Barron said.

“The parade of national costumes was my favourite part and I’d encourage everyone to attend next year.”
