Aurukun PCYC & Police engage local kids in the Catch Me If You Can Program
Local police in conjunction with the Aurukun Police-Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) ran the Catch Me if You Can (CMIYC) program on August 16.

The program uses sports to develop and improve relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander school students and local police.
The pilot program began in 2014 in the Brisbane suburb of Logan and has since expanded to cover North Queensland.
As part of the program, students are matched with a police officer of their choice and participate in team building activities and a friendly sporting competition.
The aim is for students and police officers get to know each other in a friendly environment and build positive, respectful relationships.
The CMIYC program was delivered to a select group of year 5 and 6 students from Aurukun State School and saw a group of officers from Aurukun Station participate in the mentoring sessions throughout the day.
After all the hard work was done, the afternoon consisted of Edor and Austag games in the hall before everyone finished off with a BBQ dinner.
Now for those of you who don’t know what Edor is, it’s a running game, similar to chasing and tagging.
Edor originates in the Aurukun Aboriginal Community and has been played for as long as most can remember. It’s a joy to watch and highlights the strength of the traditional culture that is evident in today’s society.
The CMIYC program was a joint venture between PCYC Indigenous Sports and Recreation Officers and police and designed to maintain strong community relationships for the future.
