Celtic Psychosis on show for Aurukun Day Celebrations
Aurukun Day falls on August 4 and celebrates the people and community of Aurukun.
This year August 4 also marked National Aboriginal and Islander Children’s Day allowing families to celebrate the strengths and culture of their children and encourage all Australians the opportunity to show their support for Aboriginal Children.
The Apunipima Cape York Health Council organised a number of activities throughout the day including fruit and water giveaways, face painting, finger painting, colouring in, other fun activities, health and education displays, food and other stalls held in the main community centre.
Officer in Charge of Aurukun Police, Senior Sergeant Brett Jenkins said Aurukun Day saw the entire community join to celebrate the successes of the community.
Aurukun Mayor, Mr Derek Walpo welcomed the Police Pipes and Drums band to town.
“Our Celtic Psychosis flew in from Brisbane on the police aircraft and commenced playing around 6:30pm,” said Senior Sergeant Jenkins.
“The variety of instruments on display had everyone excited from the start with plenty of people vying for the best seats to watch the warm up.
“You just had to be here on the night to hear the bagpipes playing and echoing throughout the community. It was truely uplifting and such a positive event for our community.
“As the band kicked off, it was brought to my attention that many of the community, especially the kids, had never seen or heard a bag pipe played before.
Our sincere thanks go to the Police Pipes & Drums band for the entertainment, Aurukun Shire Council for providing accommodation for the band and the Aurukun PCYC Relief Branch Manager for co-ordinating the logistics for the band and PCYC involvement.
