Cross Cultural Unit take up with tennants
Sponsored by the Cairns Regional Council and the Housing and Homelessness Sector, the inaugural International Tenants’ Day was celebrated at Fogarty Park in Cairns on Tuesday.
Celebrated throughout the months of September and October, the event aims to raise awareness of homelessness and to share information to support tenants in both public and private leases.
Members of The Safer Street Taskforce, Priscilla Cummins and Michael Abbott were joined by members from The QPS Cross Cultural Liaison Unit, Acting Sergeant Karen Shannon and PLO Maj-lis Dalton, who were sharing information about tenants’ rights, safety at home and promoting discussions of general housing issues.
Acting Sergeant Karen Shannon from the Far North District Cross Cultural Liaison Unit said this was a great opportunity to engage with the community.
“We saw a good cross section of our community of all ages and from multiple cultural backgrounds come together as part of International Tenants’ Day,” Acting Sergeant Shannon said.
“We even had Trevor Tim from Bumma Bippera Media 98.7FM, MC the event and stayed back to chat with members of the community and take a few happy snaps with us.”
