Drug and alcohol presentations in the Gulf
During a recent traffic enforcement trip through the Far North Queensland Gulf Communities, police took time out of their duties to attend the Kowanyama State Primary School to deliver a series of presentations to children and other community members.
Cairns Road Policing Unit Officers Sergeant Greg Rose and Senior Constable Damien West, who are on a ten-day enforcement trip through the Cape, spoke with primary students, secondary students and other community members about the dangers of drug and alcohol use, social media use, self-awareness and personal safety.
Senior Constable West is no stranger to presenting these types of talks as he is the Far North Qld Regional Adopt-a-Cop of the Year and is a finalist for the State Adopt-a-Cop of the year for 2017.
Senior Constable West takes a great interest in educating younger members of the community about the dangers of drug and alcohol use.
Senior Constable West said it’s not a problem that only exists in the bigger cities.
“It is important for children in a remote community to also be educated in the dangers of people attempting to get them to miss-use drugs and alcohol,” Senior Constable West said.
Sergeant Rose said the presentations were well received and raised awareness of these important issues all children encounter as they grow up.
“It was a great opportunity for us to engage with the children and community members from Kowanyama and help them learn about the dangers out there,” Sergeant Rose said.
