Fatal marine incident, Bailey Island
A man has died after a boat capsized off Bailey Island this evening.
The 4.5 metre vessel containing a 73-year-old man and a 40-year-old man ran in trouble around 5.45pm, capsizing 25 nautical miles east of Mackay Harbour.
The 40-year-old man managed to retrieve the EPIRB from the upturned boat and activate it while treading water and assisting the 73-year-old man to stay afloat.
The CQ Rescue helicopter responded and was able to locate the vessel and the two men however the 73-year-old man was deceased at the scene.
The 40-year-old man was winched to safety and transported to Mackay Hospital for further treatment.
Police with the assistance of Volunteer Marine Rescue later returned to the vessel to recover the deceased man.
Investigations are continuing.
