Large fire incident, Mia Mia (Pioneer Valley, Mackay)
Bushfire season is now well and truly upon us, with a number of fires reported over the last couple of weeks. Police from Mirani, Finch Hatton, Fareleigh and Mackay attended a large fire at Mia Mia in the Pioneer Valley, Mackay that was accidentally lit by a landowner clearing away rubbish on their property. A gust of wind blew burning embers into long grass, and in a short matter of time a large bushfire was burning out of control and threatening neighbouring properties.
Volunteer Rural Fire Service crews from all over the Pioneer Valley attended and fought the fire for a number of hours assisted by urban crews from Mackay.
Police attended to ensure the safety of residents should the need have arisen to evacuate from the area, conduct traffic control and investigate the fire.
One property owner was treated for a small burn to his arm and smoke inhalation by the Queensland Ambulance Service.
Bushfires can be large, spread quickly and become very dangerous, especially for the fire crews fighting the fire. If you see Rural Fire Service trucks and personal working either on or beside the road, slow down and be sure to give them plenty of room to do what they do best. Most importantly, follow all the instructions that are given to you.
