Last call for National Firearms Amnesty which closes tomorrow
The National Firearms Amnesty ends this Saturday, September 30 so this is the last opportunity members of the public will have to register or surrender unregistered firearms at a firearms dealer or police station without fear of prosecution.
Just this week a member of the public surrendered a number of weapons he had inherited from a now deceased family member. At the request of his wife, the man surrendered all items to the Cairns Police Station for destruction. He was not required to provide police with his details as he was surrendering the weapons for destruction.
The costs associated with registering a firearm will be waived, meaning, persons wishing to register unregistered firearms will not be charged any permit to acquire fee to register the unregistered firearm.
In Queensland, there are four options available regarding the surrendering or registering unregistered firearms in your possession.
These options are:
- Registering the firearm to an existing firearms licence (subject to the categories and conditions of the licence);
- Surrendering the firearm at a firearms dealer for commercial sale;
- Surrendering a firearm at a firearms dealer or police station for safekeeping, pending the issue of a firearms licence; or
- Surrendering a firearm at a firearms dealer or police station for destruction.
In the event you want to surrender firearms, we encourage you to attend a local firearms dealer rather than a police station.
Should you wish to surrender your weapons to a local police station, you are required to make an appointment to ensure we have officers available to receive the firearm.
Please ensure appropriate measures are taken to ensure the safe transport of weapons in public so as not to cause fear.
A person is only required to supply their personal details when they wish to register a firearm to their firearms licence.
