Local Cairns girls shine at IWLEC
Sixty local school girls led the Parade of Nations march through the city streets as part of the 2017 International Women and Law Enforcement Conference (IWLEC) in Cairns on Monday.
Some 1000 delegates from sixty countries from around the world, including Australia, marched in the Parade of Nations as part of the opening to the IWLEC.
We were very appreciative of our local girls for volunteering their school holidays to participate and very proud of how they represented Cairns at our international event. They are a credit to their families, schools and organisations and are commended for their efforts.
The leadership program designed specifically for our volunteers saw guest speakers such as Bindi Irwin from Australia Zoo and Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin inspire the girls to challenge themselves.
Savannah Woolcott from St Monica’s College in Cairns carried the Papua New Guinea flag in the Parade of Nations march and acknowledge the IWLEC was a fantastic opportunity to participate and recognise all those that contribute to law enforcement both in our region and around the world.
“I just loved participating in the Parade of Nations and engaging with the community”, Savannah said.
“I’m very proud of my PNG and Australian heritage and just loved the march as all the PNG Police women were singing as we marched through the streets. It was just incredible.
“I was very grateful to have the opportunity to hear from Bindi Irwin. She is very inspirational and speaks from the heart with such passion.
“Overall, it was a fantastic opportunity to meet so many lovely ladies from all around the world and I’d do it again in a heart beat if I could.”
Special thanks go to the official IWLEC 2017 photographer Ness Kerton, madNESS Photography for the use of her beautiful photographs.
