Local Doctor assists Road Safety Week promotion in Elanora

Elanora Police Beat and Volunteers in Policing at the 19th Avenue Shops for Road Safety Week

Local Doctor Andrew Walker experienced simulated intoxication at the Elanora Police Beat Road Safety Week promotion at Palm Waters Shopping Centre.

Using the Fatal Vision goggles donated to them Elanora Police, Volunteers in Policing gave members of the public the opportunity to see what its like at different levels of intoxication by donning the goggles and walking through a slalom.

The goggles are at minor, mid and high range intoxication levels. Whilst their efforts appear quite comical, the message isn’t: motorists are too frequently driving at this level of intoxication and are a danger to themselves and other road users.

The other side of this is about people walking home drunk. Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users and many that are struck by vehicles are intoxicated.

Planning to have an alternative to getting home or staying over at a friend’s house is a better option and people should plan ahead or at least have an alternative to driving or walking whilst intoxicated.
