Ormeau students quick off the mark
On Friday September 8, officers from the Norfolk Village Police Beat attended the Literacy Lockdown at the Livingstone Christian College at Ormeau. Students participated in a range of activities to get them talking about literacy and numeracy, both highly important in the learning development of young children.
The students were challenged to ‘race the radar’ where they tested their speed against a laser speed detection device. Not only were they up to the challenge with a top speed of 31km/h recorded but it got them talking about the science and maths of how the device worked.
Afterwards the students were challenged to see how many ‘preppies’ could fit in a police vehicle (21 apparently) and this related to mathematical volume and space.
It was a great opportunity for students to get to know their local police and learn more about what equipment police use and how it works. The Norfolk Beat officers look forward to participating in next year’s event to see if the benchmarks set can be beaten.
