Queensland Police release 2016/17 Annual Statistical Review

Queensland Police release 2016/17 Annual Statistical Review

Commissioner Ian Stewart has today released the Queensland Police Service (QPS) Annual Statistical Review (ASR) which provides a snap shot of crime rates across the state over the past financial year.

The 2016/17 Annual Statistical Review shows an increase of 2.1 per cent in the state’s overall crime rate.

The figures also show a rise of 8.8 per cent in offences against the person (things like murder, assault and robbery), a rise of 9.3 per cent in offences against property (things like break-in and car theft) and a five per cent reduction in the other offences category (things like drug, liquor and weapons offences).

In the longer term, crime continues to trend downwards across the state.

Over the 10-year period from 2007/08 to 2016/17, Queensland recorded a drop in the rate of offences against the person by five percent and offences against property by 2.2 percent.

Commissioner Stewart said the Statistical Review was one component of the Service’s overall performance management and accountability framework and also had a strategic role.

“The safety and security of all Queenslanders is my top priority and I know it is also the top priority of the thousands of police officers out on the beat right across the state,” Commissioner Stewart said.

“While I take ultimate responsibility as Commissioner for ensuring the safety of Queenslanders, it is important to recognise that there are many factors that influence the crime rate.

“I want to take this opportunity to reassure the community that your police are as committed now as they ever have been to preventing crime and taking action against people in the community who wish to do us harm.

“The QPS is committed to the safety and security of all Queenslanders and we will continue to formulate new and innovative strategies to deliver on that commitment.

“The ASR, when combined with other data, supports evidence-based strategic decision making – which means directing resources to where they’re needed most and to make sure we’re delivering a more integrated police service which focuses on people.

“I want thank all officers and staff of the Queensland Police Service for their ongoing efforts and commitment to the community.”
