Surfers Paradise Police support light rail safety
With Rail Safety Week drawing to a close for another year, its timely to remind everyone to keep safe in and around the Gold Coast Light Rail Network. Surfers Paradise Police work very closely with our partners at G:Link to keep patrons on and around the Light Rail safe.
The message from G:Link is ‘Think Safe. Stay Safe.” and there a few things you can do:
For pedestrians, don’t cross the Light Rail lines against a red pedestrian walking signal. The fine for jaywalking is $50 and police will enforce this. A light rail vehicles weighs as much as 40 rhinos and takes some stopping. So think safe, stay safe and follow the road rules as a pedestrian.
For drivers, the greatest danger to the light rail vehicles is illegal U-Turns at traffic lights. Surfers Paradise Police have been working with G:Link and obtained more detailed information about intersections and times this occurs. Police are actively targeting drivers performing illegal turns and if drivers are caught they can expect a penalty of $100 for making a U-Turn at lights (two demerit points), and $378 and three demerit points for disobeying a red signal.
Senior Sergeant Jim Munckton, Officer in Charge of Surfers Paradise Station reinforced the police commitment to rail safety in a joint media opportunity at the Cavill Avenue Station.
Senior Sergeant Munckton, along with Jason Ward from G:Link, spoke about the need for drivers and pedestrians to be aware around the light rail corridor and staying safe.
