The Commando wants to know, R U OK?
Today is R U OK? Day and a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that we’ve all got what it takes to ask, “are you ok?” and support those who may be struggling with life.
R U OK?’s mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life.
Our emergency services attend and see some of the most horrific events in our community and as a result, we can experience extreme highs and lows.
Today saw our emergency services and members of the community head down to Foggarty Park on the Cairns Esplanade which was transformed into RUOK? Day headquarters.
Constable Di Pocock from Cairns City Beat said this was the best start to a shift she’s ever had.
“As part of our policing duties we conducted foot patrols of Foggarty Park where the RUOK? team were set up and we even got to rub shoulders with Steve ‘Commando’ Willis and Ben Lee,” Constable Pocock said.
“I got to chat to quite a few members of the public and heard their personal stories.
“Some people do struggle on a daily basis and it’s important we all take the time to connect with others.
“It’s amazing that just a quick hello or asking the question, RUOK?, can give someone strength and let them know that someone is actually interested in hearing about how they are travelling.”
Everyone is urged to do their bit to help someone boost their confidence, connect with others and ask about life’s ups and downs, take responsibility by connecting and supporting others, be relevant, strong and dynamic, strengthen our sense of belonging and let people know you are there for them.
Everyone can help, so take the time to learn how you can ask ‘are you ok?’ in four easy steps here.
