The wheels on the bus go round and round

DSC Rauter and SC Hafner with Aurukun families and the Yellow School Bus

When Senior Constable Jake Hafner and Detective Senior Constable Ben Rauter joined the police service, they never thought they’d be driving a yellow school bus.

Drive one, they did!

Both Jake and Ben were quick to volunteer to do the school bus run around the Aurukun community to help the local School Attendance Officers (SAO’s).

The school owns two bright yellow school buses that are used to collect children from the community and deliver them safely to school, then home again.

Aurukun School Principal Michael Ennis (no, not the NSW footballer), was very appreciative and supportive of the positive engagement and interactions between police and students.

“It was great to see the fantastic support from local police and it’s been met with great enthusiasm by the kids as well,” Mr Ennis said.

Officer in Charge of Aurukun Police, Senior Sergeant Brett Jenkins agreed the engagement helped to drive very positive interactions.

“We can see great benefits in getting involved with the school and the students,” Senior Sergeant Jenkins said.

“Both Jake and Ben said they had a lot of fun getting to know the kids and their parents which in turn helps develop strong community relationships.”
