Torres Strait Island Support Officer Ned Mosby made Honorary Superintendent

Last week Commissioner Ian Stewart, Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor, Chief Superintendent Brett Schafferius, Inspector Les Bulluss and Inspector David Lacey, along with other officers travelled to Masig (Yorke Island) for a medal presentation to Torres Strait Island Police Support Officer (TSIPSO), Honorary Superintendent Ned Mosby.
The presentation was also attended by his wife Jessie, grandchildren, community members and Ned’s family and friends on Masig.
Honorary Superintendent Ned Mosby was awarded with the Queensland Police Service Meritorious Service Medal, as well the new title of Honorary Superintendent.
In 1989 Honorary Superintendent Mosby commenced duty as a Community Police officer for the Masig Island council prior to the council’s amalgamation into the Torres Strait Island Regional Council in 2008.
In 2008 he was appointed to the rank of Honorary Inspector and advisor to the Queensland Police Service on Indigenous issues in the Torres Straits by former Commissioner of Police Bob Atkinson AO APM.
In 2013 he transitioned from working as a Community Police Officer with council to working as a Torres Strait Island Police Support Officer employed by the Queensland Police Service.
As of today Honorary Superintendent Mosby has over 28 years of diligent and dedicated service to his community of Masig and the Queensland Police Service.
Some of Honorary Superintendent Mosby’s past achievements include:
- 2003 Commissioner’s award for dedicated service to Search and Rescue
- 2008 Appreciation for outstanding contribution to the safety and security of the Torres Strait community
- 2008 Australian Federal Police Award
- 2008 Ergon Energy: highly commended ‘working together above and beyond’
- 2014 Torres Strait NAIDOC community tribute award: For Excellence in Community Service; and
- 2017 Appointed as an Ambassador for Peace by the Universal Peace Federation
Commissioner Stewart said the Meritorious Service medal is awarded to a member of the Queensland Police Service who has provided a continued substantial contribution in a number of areas within the Queensland Police Service over an extended period of time.
“In making this award I have taken into account Ned Mosby’s dedicated service both with the Queensland Police Service but in his former role as a Community Police Officer employed by Council,” Commissioner Stewart said.
In turn, Honorary Superintendent Mosby presented the Commissioner with a pair of shells prevalent throughout the Ugarr (Stephen Island) area of the Torres Strait Islands.
