UCI MTB World championships a success for the Far North

Earlier this month the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships for men and women returned to the Far North for the 2017 seasons biggest single contest in mountain biking.

The far north hosted competitors and supporters from 40 countries, with many arriving well in advance to take the opportunity to train in the tropics.

Up to twenty local police officers patrolled the track, carpark and area around the Smithfield Mountain Bike track during the event ensuring crowds stayed well behaved.

And that they did. Friday saw approximately 1100 well behave spectators line the track before doubling in size to 2200 on Saturday and then 3000 on Sunday.

Far North District Tactician, Senior Sergeant Jamie Horn praised his team of officers and the spectators for ensuring the event was safe and fun for all.

“We not only had great weather for this event, we had a very colourful well behaved crowd,” Senior Sergeant Horn said.

“Our officers had to negotiate challenging terrain over the three days to ensure they covered all areas.

“I’m pleased to advise there were no arrests made and from all accounts, everyone enjoyed the championships.

“The organisors of this event have done an excellent job showcasing this event as well as our local region to the international audiences around the world.

“From our point of view, it was a great event and a positive for the Far North.”
