Update 6: Homicide investigation into the death of Cooktown woman Donna Steele

Detective Acting Superintendent Geoff Marsh is continuing a public appeal for information into the death of Cooktown woman Donna Steele.

Ms Steele’s body was found in Isabella Creek at Leggetts Crossing, about 20km north of Cooktown on August 6 this year.

Detective Acting Superintendent Marsh said the last confirmed sighting of Ms. Steele was at the Cooktown IGA on Wednesday August 2 with police continuing to appeal for anyone who was in the store between 11am and 1pm on that day to contact them.

“If you were in the IGA, and haven’t spoken to police yet, then please contact us. We want to talk to everyone who was in the store between 11am and 1pm, regardless of what you think you may or may not know,” he said.

Police are also calling on anyone who was driving, hitchhiking or walking on Poison Creek Road, Oaky Creek Road or Endeavour Valley Road on the same date to contact them.

Investigator’s updated Ms Steele’s family when they met with her brother in Cooktown last weekend.

“It is always a very hard conversation briefing family on the investigation into the death of a loved one. Donna’s family are devastated by her loss and are hoping someone in the community will come forward with information to help solve this crime.

“Someone in Cooktown knows what happened to Donna. Eventually people talk, people tell someone else, people make mention of what they know to a trusted party.

“We want that trusted person to have the courage to come forward, to help provide answer’s to Donna’s family,” Detective Acting Superintendent Marsh said.

A team of police, including local detectives and officers from the Homicide Investigation Squad continue to investigate Ms Steele’s death, with forensic evidence, which continues to be examined in Brisbane, generating additional lines of inquiry for investigators.

Anyone with information in relation to the death or prior movements Ms Steele is urged to contact police.
