Vandalism, Bowen cemetery
A cemetery is normally a quiet place. A place to pay your respects to the dearly departed, and to reflect on memories of those who have passed.
After a senseless act of vandalism on September 19 Bowen locals have been left shaking their collective heads, and wondering what on this earth could possess someone to callously damage tributes to those who have passed.
Between 4:30 and 5pm on this day, witnesses have reported seeing two unknown male persons walking through the cemetery. They were allegedly observed kicking over headstones and smashing vases as they made their way across the grass. Officers who attended the scene shortly after have unfortunately observed a number of marble headstones had been cracked, which may not be able to be repaired.
Police believe that two juvenile males seen in the area can assist them with their inquiries. The first male is described as Caucasian and was wearing a red shirt. The second male is described as Aboriginal in appearance. He was wearing only shorts, however was carrying a blue shirt in his hand. They were both estimated to be approximately 13-years of age.
This type of callous behaviour should not be allowed to go unchecked. It affects our whole community and saddens us all.
