Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait) Rugby League Cup 2017

Police Team – The Mura Beizam Sharks

Thursday Island Police recently competed in the Zenadth Kes Rugby League carnival, that was held between Friday October 13, through to Sunday October 15.

The police team, named Mura Beizam, comprised of three police officers from Thursday Island, two PLO’s from as far away as Coen and Mareeba, five TSIPSO’s, three members of the family of serving TSIPSO,  community members from various Island’s and guest player, Casey McGuire a former Brisbane Bronco’s NRL Player.

Coaching staff and management were from Thursday Island Police, with Sergeant Steve Tillett and members from the Police Indigenous recruiting also in attendance.

There were nine teams in the men’s competition divided into two pools with Mura Beizam being team number five in Pool A, and pool B consisting of four other teams.

Throughout the carnival Mura Beizam played each of the other teams in pool A and survived the pool matches to make it through to the knockouts to compete in the quarter final on the Sunday morning. Unfortunately, that was the end of the line for Mura Beizam after going down to the Saibai Stags in the quarter final.

The two teams that battled it out in the grand final on Sunday afternoon were Mulga and the Saibai Stags, with the Mulga side from Badu Island taking out the title.

Games were played in a hard but fair manner by all teams.

Rugby league is a passion in the Torres Straits and this was a great way for police to connect with the community with many positive comments received.

Great sportsmanship shown by the Sharks and the Stags
